Get Off the Mains If You Want

Solar panels and a battery can cut your bills, keep the lights on in a cut, and take pressure off the grid. You do not have to go fully off-grid — most homes stay connected and sell spare power back. This page explains how it works, what it costs, and the rules that keep it safe and legal.

Not legal advice. Always consult a solicitor. We help you understand your rights. Costs and rates change; check current figures with the sources below and get quotes from MCS-certified installers.

How solar + battery storage works

The journey of the electricity is simple. Panels make DC power in daylight, the inverter turns it into the AC power your home uses, and any surplus is stored in a battery for the evening. If you stay connected to the grid, extra power can be exported and you get paid under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).

Battery systems — a few well-known names

These are examples only, not recommendations or affiliate links. Compare warranties, usable capacity (kWh), round-trip efficiency and installer support before buying. A good installer will size the battery to your actual use, not just sell the biggest one.

Tesla Powerwall

13.5 kWh home battery with app monitoring and backup during cuts. One of the premium-priced options; often paired with Tesla solar or any compatible inverter.

GivEnergy

UK-popular hybrid inverters and batteries (roughly 5–13 kWh), strong app control and a wide installer network. Often a mid-price choice.

Anker SOLIX

Plug-and-play balcony and home battery systems, plus larger whole-home storage. Known for portable power stations expanding into fixed home storage.

EcoFlow

Portable power stations and modular home battery kits (PowerOcean / Delta series) for backup and partial off-grid setups. Good for renters and smaller systems.

Brand facts are general product descriptions. Always confirm current specs and price with the manufacturer or an MCS-certified installer.

Typical system sizes and costs (UK)

Figures are typical ranges and change with equipment, roof type and installer. VAT on residential solar panels and battery storage installed together is currently 0% (a relief running to 31 March 2027). Always get at least three quotes.
